PETE ROCK X CL SMOOTH X ERNIE HINES=STRAIGHTEN IT OUT!
The newest issue of Wax Poetics features an article on singer/composer/arranger Ernie Hines. Hines' may not be a household name, but fans of real Hip Hop will certainly recognize the sample lifted from his song 'Our Generation'. Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth sampled the cut (and lyric!) for their song 'Straighten It Out' on the legendary MECCA AND THE SOUL BROTHER album. Check 'em both out below! The lyrics to the song were actually penned by a Chicago public school teacher... Pick up the magazine and read the rest.

New Jamiroquai - "Rock, Dust, Light, Stars" + "White Knuckle Teaser"
After a 5 year break from it all since their last studio LP, Dynamite, Jamiroquai’s new album Rock Dust Light Star is to be released by Mercury Records in November 2010 – and will be the British funk/acid jazz/pop/generally wonderful band’s 7th studio album.
According to the group’s official website, the sound of the new album has “moved on [from electronic, disco influenced tracks] and reverted to a more organic, live sound. The shift really helped revitalise the band who ended up producing a superb album – even if we do say it ourselves! We hope you all agree as you get to hear it.”
Head honcho Jason ‘Jay’ Kay says, “Everything on the record is live. It’s a real band record. The last album – fantastic – but the whole thing became a little sterile. This time we’ve captured the flow of our live performances".
Jamiroquai.com reports, “The album has been recorded mainly at Jay’s home studio in Buckinghamshire, and also at legendary Hook End Manor in Oxfordshire. The album is entirely written by Jay Kay and the band, and produced by Jay alongside first time collaborators Charlie Russell and Brad Spence.”
“White Knuckle Ride” is the first taster from the new album [teaser video below] – available only on strictly limited edition vinyl prior to the album. Described as a “hi-octane retrospective on Jay’s career experiences,” this will be followed by “Blue Skies” in November; “an epic, blissful, sun-kissed Californian mid tempo song with lush string arrangements and perhaps Jay’s most emotive vocal to date – pure class.”
p.s.
Jamiroquai is a BAND...not a person. The front man is Jay Kay, his name is not Jamiroquai.

Split Infinitives’ Essential Swizz Beats Mixtape
For those who don’t know or follow Split Infinitives author Sean Fennessey, let us tell you that this dude is the most meticulous mp3 tagger in the history of mp3s. He’s been known to admit to spending large chunks of weekends breaking rap songs into sub-categories that allow him to break out hyperreductive playlists like “Rap Made on Nostrand Avenue in November 1995 by Dudes with Uncles Named Phillip” and the shit still knocks. So, when Fennessey posted this fairly comprehensive 3CD (ha) mixtape of the Essential Swizz we had no choice but to direct you to this excellent and soon-to-be excised from the internet by every major label collection of one of our favorite artists. Get it while supplies last.

How to make bootleg VINYL!
File this under cool stuff that you'd NEVER even considered trying at home.
Materials Needed: word panels, glass plate, window seal, silicone, 1 record.
Using the wooden strips, make a box around the glass plate. Seal off the edges using the window cement. Make sure everything is air tight.
Place your record inside the box making sure that the portion to be copied is facing upward. Squeeze in some window cement to mark where the hole in the record is.
Mix the silicone (Smooth On OOMOO 30 or OOMOO 25) for about 3 minutes before pouring in to the mold.
Pour in the mixture. Start from one corner and let it fill-up the mold to about half a centimeter. Make sure it’s even. Let it dry for 6 hours.
Peel off the silicone from the cast. Cut off the excess using a cutter.
Pour the liquid plastic on top of the silicone cast.
Make sure that nothing spills over the round form. You can also brush off any air bubbles that might occur.
Carefully loosen the plate from the silicone form. Using a drill press, bore a hole through the center of the plate. You can use the silicone form as a template to make more copies.
There you have it. Your very own pirated record!
