Last year Smirnoff Vodka hosted the tv show Master of The Mix (Click here for video). This was a premiere DJ battle event featuring living legends such as DJ Scratch, Jazzy Joyce, Vikter Duplaix & more. The judges were DJ Kid Capri and long-time Jay-Z producer Just Blaze. The contestants themselves could have all been judges without a doubt, but the winner was DJ Scratch of EPMD. He's clearly one of the greatest DJ's in hip-hop.

The Shrine was chosen by Smirnoff to host the invite only victory party with the legendary DJ Scratch and DJ Clue (Roc-A-Fella). Serious business!

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest (Trailer)

The trailer for the documentary 'Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest' directed by Michael Rappaport

House Music: A Love Story

Last week, Afropop Wordwide released Midwest Electric: The Story of Chicago House and Detroit Techno. The hour long audio documentary carefully dissects the DNA of House music, from its Disco roots, to its birth in Chicago, to its diaspora in Europe, all the way to its future in Africa. The piece puts a bowtie on the genre’s often grimy roots, with a cerebral view on its cultural fabric and a step-by-step journey into its inspiration. Interviews with Vince Lawrence, Juan Atkins, and countless other founding fathers and mothers paint vividly colored pictures of House’s music’s story, with a soundtrack sure to launch House Heads into nostalgia. Fall in love all over again here:

Get lost in the bassline and the timeline July 3rd, 2011 as Bang! Sundays and House legend Terry Hunter welcome Black Coffee to The Shrine.

Little Louie Vega - 101

These are all songs produced/mixed by Little Louie Vega (& Kenny Dope).

KiD CuDi - Marijuana (directed by Shia LaBeouf)

Kid Cudi is back with the video for “Marijuana”–recorded back before he came clean–directed by none other than Shia LaBeouf of Transformers fame. The song (off last year’s Man on the Moon II LP) is more in line with the ill melodies and half-awake choruses that we’ve come to expect from the lonely stoner. But come to think about it, for a rap song there is still a lot of psychedelic guitar going on and not a lot of rapping. The video appears to be an arty handheld travelogue through the hash-cafes and hoe-houses of Amsterdam, so if the song’s title was not enough indication we can safely assume just from the location that Cudi and Shia had taken a few baggies of that Optimus Prime to the face by the time they flicked the camera on.
