4.27.10 - Timbuck2uesdays hosted by Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek

We had special guest hosts Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek tonight for Timbuck2uesdays!

The night started with DJ Castle taking us back to hip-hop's heyday with a classic selection of 90s Eastcoast beats and rhymes via songs by Black Moon, Royal Flush, Kurupt, Mos Def and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Slightly before midnight DJ Timbuck2 took over the reigns of the sound system and once again showed us why Tuesday night is Timbuck2uesday.

Seemingly appearing out of nowhere Talib Kweli, his wife DJ Eque and Hi-Tek came to rock the crowd & gave the entire venue eargasms. Talib Kweli's unmistakable voice greeted the crowd and he began dj'ing. Kweli & Hi-Tek played us some of their classic songs and even a few new ones we've yet to hear.

DIGGIN' CHICAGO - WINDY CITY CRATES PT 3 (LOWRELL X COMMON X MASSIVE ATTACK)

A few years back, a good friend sent me a stack of records which included Lowrell's "Mellow, Mellow Right On". It's a dope slow jam which was recorded in Chicago in 1979. Maybe not coincidentally then, it was sampled by Common on "Reminding Me (Of Sef)" on his ONE DAY IT'LL ALL MAKE SENSE album. It was also sampled by Massive Attack on BLUE LINES', "Lately".

Wondering where a sample came from? Check out: http://www.whosampled.com Cool site "exploring and discussing the DNA of music". They post the the sample(s) for songs and the originals.

R.I.P. Guru (Gang Starr)

Hip-Hop/Jazz artist Guru (July 17, 1966 – April 19, 2010) passed away last night, but his music still lives on! February 28th, 2010 Guru suffered a cardiac arrest and following surgery, days later fell into a coma. He woke from the coma but died on April 19, 2010 after a long battle with cancer. I expect DJ Timbuck2 & guest DJ; Radamas will show love to Guru's memory and play tonz (of gunz) of Gang Starr tonight!

Do remember on June 2nd, 2010 The Shrine has DJ Premier in the house!

And now some classic Gang Starr videos!

DIGGIN' CHICAGO - WINDY CITY CRATES PT 2 (THE ROLLING STONES - 2120 S MICHIGAN)

2120 S Michigan. Right around the corner from The Shrine, in the heart of what was once Record Row in the South Loop. It was the address of CHESS RECORDS - the legendary Blues, R & B, Soul & Jazz label! Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry, Koko Taylor... The Rolling Stones?!? In 1965, the then nascent Stones came to Chicago to record some instrumental tracks for their '5 x 5' album. The name of the group came from a Muddy Waters song and the band wanted to record where their musical heroes created their own music. 2120 S Michigan is a great instrumental R & B groover with some fine harmonica by Brian Jones. Empty Heart is another lost classic. More urban archeology, Chicago style!

Lagos to Chicago - Shrine 101

Now lots of people are already in the know, but some folks may not be aware that The Shrine owes its name to Fela Kuti, or simply Fela as he is known to millions of fans worldwide. Fela (1938-1997) was a Nigerian born multi-instumentalist, composer, political and human rights activist. He was a pioneer of Afrobeat music, a fusion of African rhythms with jazz and funk. Fela regularly performed with his band, Nigeria '70 at his personal nightclub, The Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria. Lagos to Chicago. The name is in homage to The Original Black President, Mr. Fela Kuti.

Fela kicked out the jams in his all too short lifetime. Here is a short list of essential Fela or Fela related albums.... In no particular order.

Fela Kuti - Expensive Sh*t (1975) Contains 'Water No Get Enemy' This will cause a riot on the dance floor - ask Timbuck2

Fela Kuti - He Miss Road (1975) Produced by Cream drummer Ginger Baker. (Who also recorded two records with Fela worth checking. One under each man's name respectively.)

Fela Kuti - Zombi (1977) Fela rips the Nigerian army for brainwashing its soldiers..."Music is the weapon"

Fela Kuti & Roy Ayers - Music of Many Colors (1980) Contains '2000 Black'. Afrobeat meets Ayers funky jazz vibes - classic!

Fela Kuti - Lagos Baby 1963-69 (2008) Compilation shows the evolution of sound from Highlife to Afrobeat with his original Koola Lobitos band.

Fela Kuti - Shakara (1971) With 'Lady' and 'Shakara', long time fan favorites. The cover is worth price alone.

Tony Allen - No Discrimination (1979) Fela's funky drummer and band leader for twelve years. (He was relpaced with FOUR drummers.) Contains 'Love Is A Natural Thing'. Afrobeat with some squishy synth lines ala Parliament.

Tony Allen - Black Voices (1999) Tony comes back with a modern dubbed out sound with bits of electronics and Parliament's Mike 'Cop' Payne & Gary 'Mudbone' Cooper, too.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80 (2008) Fela's son continues the Afrobeat sound with his father's band. He is monster live too, just like dad!

Femi Kuti - African Shrine (2004) Femi cooks on this live set with both originals and a cover of his father's 'Water get No Enemy'!

Flashback: N'Dambi's live performance at The Shrine (march 2010)

N'DAMBI @ THE SHRINE CHICAGO from The Shrine on Vimeo.

N'Dambi performed live on March 6th at The Shrine, the video is a montage of her performance, also featuring an interview with Ron Trent.

Beginning as a background singer for Neo-Soul legend Erykah Badu, Dallas, Texas' own N’dambi has been singing nearly her entire life. She delivered her debut solo CD Little Lost Girl Blues in 1999. Since then she has released the two-disc set Tunin' Up & Cosignin', which focused more on a live and jazzy sound and contains new versions of several songs from her debut. After this, in 2005, she released A Weird Kind Of Wonderful, which contained funkier and more rock-influenced tracks. It was released only in Japan, which made it a very sought-after collector's item on eBay. These projects were released independently by N'dambi, but still managed to garner considerable critical acclaim. In late 2006 N'dambi was signed to the re-activated Stax Records along with Angie Stone, Lalah Hathaway, Soulive and Leon Ware. Her latest album Pink Elephant was released on October 6, 2009 (Album release party was at The Shrine).

On Pink Elephant, N’dambi ingeniously distills soul-deep inspiration into a sensual style of elegance and power, making her a fundamental new addition to the Stax legacy.
