We get an intimate mini-doc on the hardest working band in the biz, and now 4 time Grammy award winners, The Roots. Cam Be (director/editor) and Jeff Baraka (Interviewer/co-producer) tagged along with The Roots for a few stops on last year’s Hennessey Artistry tour, and got some great footage. Says Cam of the vid: “In this film I wanted to not only highlight the versatility of a group that has played with most everyone in the industry. But also capture candid moments of real human beings just trying to share the gifts they have been given to the best of their abilities.” Props to videographer (of the shrine & more) Cam Be.

In honor of John Legend & The Roots‘ Grammy nominated album, Wake Up!, J & Truelements Music put together this remix compilation featuring Legend, The Roots Crew, Rakim, Common, Nneka, Q-Tip, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, K’Naan, and more. Black Thought hosts this epic mixtape, which remixes and rebuilds the original recording sessions from the Wake Up! album. To go along with this tape, J will also release an exclusive digital 12″ on Tuesday (2/15) featuring a collab between John Legend, Black Thought, and the God MC Rakim, “In The Ghetto (Wake Up!).” “When this project began, I was excited to explore the legacy of soul music behind the WAKE UP! album,” explains J.Period, “but I had no idea of the level of access and creative freedom I would be granted by John Legend & The Roots to tell that story. It's no secret Fela Kuti has had an a huge impact on music, especially Hip Hop. His beats have been sampled and his attitude was the original swagga. Roots bandleader ?uestlove talks about why the man continues to be vital today.

John Legend & The Roots - Hard Times (featuring Black Thought)

John Legend and The Roots are bringing out the best of each other’s great taste for pillar songs from soul music’s prime—the ’60s and ’70s on this new album. I really think this new album could be a benchmark in both of their careers. It’s rare we see The Roots make an alliance with a solo artist, Jay-Z was one of the last great moments when ?uestlove and company made history with him on his Unplugged album, carrying their live synergy to Madison Square Garden and beyond. Overall I really dig this song (Hard Times) and the entire album. It's about 11 tracks deep and all are very good. Check out this video of the live version.

John Legend & The Roots - Our Generation

The Roots & John Legend team-up for Levi’s Pioneer Sessions 2010 Revival Recordings and record “Our Generation” – a classic by soul singer Ernie Hines.

Definitely came out dope.



John Legend is preparing his collaborative album with The Roots, Wake Up! due out later this year.

The Roots - How I Got Over (album Sampler)

If you’ve been wanting to check out more on The Roots album, they released a 90 second sampler of every track for fans to preview. I remember The Roots playing a little bit of their upcoming album (How I Got Over) at The Shrine in 2009 and now since hearing “Dear God 2.0”, my high hopes are even higher for "How I Got Over". The crew never disappoints though. You can hear part of Blu’s verse on “Radio Daze” as well. He’s slated to be featured on a couple tracks.
