I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who attended Terry Hunter's Bang with Special Guest (All the way from Johannesburg, South Africa...) Black Coffee. It was an amazing night of house music! Amazing music period. It was truly a quintessential Shrine event, with a diverse crowd of music lovers and dancers coming together for an unforgettable evening.

It's been a pleasure to work with Terry Hunter, Reggie Corners, and of course our own Leonard Part Sixx. We look forward to providing Chicago with amazing music every Sunday!!!

RIP Gil-Scott Heron

The cruel irony of life is that many times our strongest voices are consumed and silenced by the very same ills they rally against. Gil Scott Heron spent his entire career giving voice to the struggles and experience of Black Americans. He fell prey to the same vices he talked of in The Bottle and Home Is Where The Hatred is. Sadder, is he seemed to have begun to outrun his demons in recent years, recording his first album (I'm New Here) in sixteen years. His influence on what has become known as modern Hip Hop cannot be under-estimated. KRS-One, Public Enemy, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Blackalicious, Lupe Fiasco... all have taken pages from Heron's book. Sad day. Let's hope more people will pick up on his message. We need more Hip Hop artists and less rappers these days.

Lately, the greats that have defined our cultured society with their creative craft have been dropping like flies. However, their spirits live on through tributes created by those who have an immense appreciation for their work. The production collective Cookin’ Soul did just that with the news of Gil Scott-Heron’s passing on Friday , May 27, and compiled many of his most celebrated songs into a 17 track mixtape.

With the melding of old soul and neo-hip hop grooves, Scott-Heron’s voice cuts through like a hot knife through butter, and continues to serenade with seasoned words of knowledge. Dear People of Chicago,

Since June 2009, the Shrine has been dedicated to bringing celebrated, unique live concerts to Chicago in an upscale, intimate setting. The Shrine team works passionately to offer its patrons just what they hope to deliver: excellence in music, ambiance, and service. More often than not, the Shrine achieves in this aspiration.
This past weekend, the Shrine scheduled a live performance by J* Davey with Res as the opening act. Unfortunately, Res cancelled her performance shortly before the show due to illness. In her place, the Shrine scheduled local talent to open for J*Davey. In addition to the local talent, there was an additional impromptu performance by a member of J*Davey’s entourage. Unbeknownst to the Shrine team, the individual performs under the name Reese, pronounced the same as Res.

The Shrine is an establishment of integrity and has a solid commitment to customer service. As such, we found it necessary to address the attendees the night of the concert to announce that Res would not be performing. The Shrine also offered complimentary tickets for its upcoming shows as a courtesy for any inconvenience it may have caused its patrons. Again, no process is perfect. Every endeavor at the Shrine is taken seriously and we stand equally committed to being an integral part of the urban nightlife experience. Our posture, our commitment, and our practices are always done with the best of intentions.
